Te Wana Quality Programme

Te Wana Quality Programme is an exciting and flexible quality improvement programme that can help your organisation to:

  • establish a quality management system
  • develop a culture of reflection and continuous improvement
  • achieve external accreditation
  • strengthen its networks
  • participate in a peer review system
  • develop its workforce

Characteristics unique to Te Wana quality improvement programme are the Treaty of Waitangi standards and a flexible approach that means we can customise a package to meet individual requirements and needs in a range of New Zealand settings.

Te Wana also offers services and training to assist organisations improve their quality systems and outcomes. 

A peer review system means reviewers are trained, but who actually work in organisations similar to the services being reviewed. This keeps the programme costs reasonable as well as reviewers who are relevant and knowledgeable to your nature of service. Te Wana cycle follows key milestones typical of continuous quality improvement

  • internal review or self assessment (service stakeholders)
  • external review conducted by peer reviewers
  • feedback ( identifying strengths and areas for improvement)
  • taking action (taking a planned, systematic approach to service development based on feedback)

How Te Wana Started

Te Wana Quality Programme was launched in 2000 by Health Care Aotearoa HCA following extensive community consultation. HCA is a network of primary health care services and Te Wana programme is offered to its membership. However organisations are not required to be HCA members, and enrolments are not exclusive to primary health care services.

Who accredits organisations?

Health Care Aotearoa is a licensed provider of the Quality Improvement Council QIC an Australasian accreditation body. Third party accreditation from the International Society for Quality In Health Care (ISQUA) means Te wana Quality Programme and its licensed provider HCA, complies with international accreditation requirements.

Who is on the programme?

Te Wana is used by a range of groups including iwi services, Pacifika, youth, primary health, mental health, community social services, and national lobbying organisations. The groups vary in size from a few staff to many hundreds, some with volunteer involvement in their services. Primary Health Organisations PHOs are also interested in the programme as a pathway for accreditation and a tool for quality improvement.
Te Wana understands that every organisation and sector is different that’s why Te Wana offers a range of options to assist your organisation improve their quality systems and outcomes for service users, staff and community. Organisations don’t have to be highly advanced or knowledgeable in quality systems to benefit from the programme - training and resources are provided. Our flexible approach means we can customise a package to meet individual requirements and needs.
