Te Wana highlighted in the NZ Doctor
An article appeared in the May 2008 NZ Doctor. Below is an extract of this article:
"....Te Wana provides a combination of standards and indicators for clinical practice and organisational functions, and is based on an Australasian primary care accreditation programme. An extensive two year consultation process was undertaken to ensure the standards and programme has a New Zealand perspective. Vitally, this consultation involved Maori and the addition of specific Te Tiriti o Waitangi standards."
"Te Wana works collaboratively with its stakeholders, including DHBs, PHOs and other quality bodies. It has important differences from other quality programmes, such as the overarching prominence of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and community relationships, and a comprehensive organisational review."
"Te Wana goes beyond clinical practice to include systems for effective governance, consumer input, community engagement and health promotion. Organisations must be able to show they are responsible to the priorities and needs of both individuals and their wider communities. This fosters a holistic, population view of health and healthcare, and is one of the reasons the programme is recognised in the Primary Health Care Strategy."
"Over 80 organisations are doing the programme, ranging from national bodies, such as Plunket, the Mental Health Foundation, the New Zealand AIDS Foundation, and the union health centres, through to community and marae-based services."
"Te Wana seeks to inspire improved individual and organisational performance rather than to merely identify areas of deficiency, ie, Te Wana seeks to establish and embed a culture of open reflection and learning."
